One of my daily stops on the Internet and what could arguably be classified as a mania is the Drudge Report website. Being a collection of links to a variety of news stories of the moment, the site has been a trusted servant in providing an electronic finger on the pulse of the news beat.
That said, be it either slow changes in the selection of news or that I'm just beginning to notice, there seems to be an increasing number of news stories that fall under the categories of either fluff, garbage or yawn. Today's non-news, complete with picture, proclaimed:
BOY GEORGE: 'I won't be voting for Tony Blair again'...
Let me make something perfectly clear: I don't give a flying fawk what Boy George, Bono, Richard Gere or any other entertainer/celebrity thinks about anything; political or otherwise. Drudge can pander to the celebrity fanbase out there with such trite postings, however doing so comes at the expense of covering real news.
Being more than just proficient in the sometimes fine art of knee-jerk reaction, I blasted off the following to Matt Drudge, consequences be damned ...
Matt:
Honestly, dude -- who the fuck cares whether Boy George votes for Tony Blair again?
Cut the lame bullshit and report real news.
Sheesh!

By the way, I noticed this Boy George nonsense at 9:45 A.M. E.S.T. -- right around the time that news media types were falling all over one another to be first to the airwaves, press and Internet with news of the death of Terri Schiavo: aka real news. According to my monitoring the radio and Internet, WTIC-AM 1080 came up first on my radar screen with "CNN has announced that Terri Schiavo has died." At 10:00 A.M. CNN added a breaking news banner to their website, with a story added at 10:07 A.M. At 10:15 A.M. the CBS updated their website. Guess who was last?
Yup. Drudge Report. At 10:29 A.M. Last place.
